Think about the word 'mother'. What comes to your mind? A happy child being hugged by his mother, or, a sad child waiting for his mother's attention? Or maybe, seeing your mother walking away from you on that first day at school. Whatever you see, a mother brings out strong images, feelings and emotions.

The nurturing of children is a challenging task, financially, emotionally and physically. Sometimes, they are our 'bundle of joy' but at other times, they weigh us down. In bringing them up, have we been guilty of favouritism? When we were tired, did we blurt out that they were a burden to us?

Parenting has been going on over the years but yet, child educators are still organising talks and seminars on the subject. Children nowadays, are far more intelligent and exposed to newer environments, than during our time. It would help us if we are fed with new ideas or techniques on child upbringing.

In my opinion, there are so many areas that are important in this issue. Let's just mention three specific areas. Firstly, how we manage our time with them, secondly, understanding their individual personalities, and thirdly, how to approach child discipline. No matter how busy we are, we must make time for them. While attending to them, be aware of their behaviour and presonality traits. When there is a need to discipline our child, we would be able to make a better decision on what kind of disciplinary action to take, as we can foresee the outcome having studied their personality beforehand.

Mothers have been known to give up their careers for their children. Mothers have sacrificed their own comforts for the sake of their children. Our children are our future. William Ross Wallace once said, quote, 'The hand that rocks the cradle, is the hand that rules the world'.
