Why Qur'an and not the Bible

1.    The Qur’an is in its original language. The earliest copies of the New Testament are in Greek and not the language of Jesus or his disciples who spoke Aramaic. When it is not in the original language, much distortion comes about in translations.

2.    It is claimed to be the absolute word of God. Every alphabet  in it is God’s. Even the words of the Prophet are not mixed in it but collated separately in books called the hadith.

The Bible on the other hand is a mixture of words claimed to be that of God, of his prophets and of other persons who chose to write. The Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible in fact tells us that many of the authors of the books of the Bible, though claimed to be written by named persons are in fact written by persons unknown.

3.    Though there are various sects in Islam as in other religions, there is only one Qur’an which is the same throughout the world. The interpretations (not translations as the Qur’an cannot be translated) may differ but the Arabic text remains the same for everyone.

The same cannot be said for the Bible. The Catholics and Protestants have different bibles. The Catholic Bible has 73 books whilst the Protestant Bible has 66. Even within the same sect it is found that the text differs, not just being a matter of different translation, but in its text and substance.

The Qur’an in fact tells us that the Bible has been changed by Man. For example it states, speaking about the Jews & Christians:

:

Chapter 3 verse78. There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it!

In Chapter 5 verses 14 & 15 it says:

14. From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the other, to the day of judgment. And soon will Allah show them what it is they have done.

15. O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Messenger, revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book, and passing over much (that is now unnecessary). There hath come to you from Allah a (new) light and a perspicuous Book,-

When I examined the Bible and read material on its history, it became clear that it was altered over time. Even Western scholars accept this.

It became clear that the pure teachings of Jesus had been changed out of all recognition so that today the Muslims can rightfully claim to be the true followers of Jesus and not the Christians.

Christianity had been infused with pagan and mythical teachings and Greek philosophy so that it is no longer what Jesus taught. You may wish to see websites by Western non-Muslims on this point. These are just some:

Here are some excerpts from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fuzzypeg/Mithraism_and_Christianity

“Mithras was born from a virgin on December 25, a date later co-opted by Christians as Christ's birthday in 320 AD. A traveling teacher and master, Mithras also performed miracles. He had twelve companions as Jesus had twelve disciples. Mithras died for man’s sins and was resurrected on the following Sunday. The crucifix, water baptism and the breaking of bread and wine are also shared by both religions…..

Both religions used the rite of baptism, and each participated in an outwardly similar type of sacrament, bread and wine. Both Mithra and Christ were supposedly visited by shepherds and Magi. It has been claimed that both Mithraism and Christianity considered Sunday their holy day, though for different reasons….”

Excerpts from it:

Mithraism, the religion followed by those who worshipped the sun god Mithra, originated in Persia about 400 BC, and was to spread its Pagan ideas as far west as the British Isles. In the early centuries of the Christian era, Mithraism was the most wide-spread religion in the Western World, and its remains are to be found in monuments scattered around the countries of Europe, which then comprised the known civilised world.

Mithra was regarded as created by, yet co-equal with, the Supreme Deity. Mithraists were Trinitarian, kept Sunday as their day of worship, and their chief festivals were what we know of as Christmas and Easter. Long before the advent of Jesus, Mithra was said to have been born of a virgin mother, in a cave, at the time of Christmas, and died on a cross at Easter. Baptism was practised, and the sign of the cross was made on the foreheads of all newly-baptised converts. Mithra was considered to be the saviour of the world, conferring on his followers an eternal life in Heaven, and, similar to the story of Jesus, he died to save all others, provided that they were his followers.

For three centuries both religions ran parallel, Mithraism first becoming known to the Romans in 70 BC, Christianity following a century later, and it wasn't until AD 377 that Christianity became sufficiently strong to suppress its former rival, although Mithraism was to remain a formidable opponent for some time after that, only slowly being forsaken by the people. It was only the absorption of many Mithraist ideas into Christianity which finally saw its downfall.

The big turning point was brought about by the Congress of Nicaea in AD 325. Constantine, a great supporter of the Christian religion, although not converting to it until the time of his decease, gathered together 2,000 leading figures in the world of theology, the idea being to bring about the advent of Christianity as the official state religion of Rome. It was out of this assembly that Jesus was formally declared to be the Son of God, and Saviour of Mankind, another slain saviour god, bringing up the tally of slain god-men to seventeen, of which Mithra, together with such men as Bel and Osiris, was included.

Just as Nicaea can be regarded as the birthplace of Christianity, so too it can be regarded as the graveyard of what we imagine Jesus taught. From that time onwards, Christianity was to absorb the superstitions of Mithraism, and many other older religions, and what was believed to have happened to earlier saviour gods, was made to centre around the Nazarene. The coming of Christianity under state control was to preserve it as a religion, and was the death knell of all other sects and cults within the Roman Empire.

Under Emperor Jovian, who followed Julian, the substitution of Christianity for Mithraism made further progress, and old Pagan beliefs, like the Virgin Birth, Baptism and Holy Trinity, became generally accepted as the basis of the state religion. The early Christian idea of Unitarianism was quickly squashed in favour of Trinitarianism, and those who refused to accept the Holy Trinity were put to the sword, the beginning of mass slaughter in the name of religion, which was to go on for centuries.

4.    The Qur’an challenges Man that if they doubt it is from God, look into it for discrepancies because God does not speak as such. I have looked and cannot find any. Scholars meanwhile have found numerous discrepancies in the Bible.

5.    God in the Qur’an challenged Man that if they doubt the Qur’an is from God, then produce a book like it, or even a chapter of it or even 10 verses and He says no man can. Till today no one has succeeded in doing so, though not for want of trying.

6.    The Qur’an’s teachings is in very clear terms unlike the Bible which is confusing to almost all its followers. God is not a God of confusion.

7.     The Qur’an speaks of many truths which was impossible for a man, who was illiterate and living in the 6th century in the desert to have known on his own. Modern discoveries have found them to be absolutely true. Better explained here: http://www.islam-guide.com/ For example it spoke of the expanding Universe. Only lately has Stephen Hawkings discovered that the Universe is in fact expanding.

8.    The Qur’an from the time of the Prophet was perfectly preserved by scores of men memorizing the whole text so that no one could change it. Every generation of men have seen scores of men memorise it and today there are tens of thousands who have memorised it.

9.    God in the Qur’an has promised Man that He will ensure that it is safeguarded. No other Scripture makes such a claim.

10.     The Bible,(and this is the clincher) if we know how to interprete it, foretells of the coming of Prophet Muhammad and his mission to bring Man to God.

11.     The Qur’an reconciles all the different Scriptures and explains the differences by stating that Man had altered parts of earlier Scriptures. No other Scripture explains the differences. It explains that God has sent to Mankind about 124,000 prophets Every nation and its peoples had its prophets but Man continued to change His messages so the Qur’an was sent to clarify all things and is the final revelation.

12.     The Qur’an prescribes a way of life for Man to lead. The Bible doesn’t quite do so and leaves Man unguided in many things.

13.     The Qur’an from the time of the Prophet was perfectly preserved by scores of men in every generation memorizing the whole text so that no one could change it. No other Scripture is so memorized.

14.      When reading the Qur’an, it is clear that it is worded in the fashion of God speaking to you  directly and not of some narrative written by Man as is the case of other Scriptures.

15.     The religion of Islam is not named after a person or a people, nor was it decided by a later generation of man, as in the case of Christianity which was named after Jesus Christ, Buddhism after Gautama Buddha, Confucianism after Confucius, Judaism after the tribe of Judah and Hinduism after the Hindus( which in its origins referred to people living across the river Indus).

16.    The Qur’an teaches the purest form of monotheism, a clear concept of God. It teaches that God is one. God has no son.

It calls man away from worship of creation and invites him to worship only his Creator. False religions all have in common one basic concept with regard to God --- they either claim that all men are gods, or that specific men were God, or that nature is God, or that God is a figment of man’s imagination.

Thus, it may be stated that the basic message of false religion is that God may be worshipped in the form of His creation. False religions invite man to the worship of creation by calling the creation or some aspect of it God.

17.     Universality of God’s religion--- the true religion of God cannot be confined to any one people, place, or period of time, as is the case of some religions.

18.     No intermediaries in Islam. Access to God is direct and available to every person. There is no need to go through intermediaries or saints or holy men or spirits.

      19.     The Qur’an secures consistency and rationality of belief through its logical and rational

           principles.

20.    In Islam, there is no celibacy, because celibacy is against human nature. Islam urges the Muslim to get married as soon as he can, because it is difficult for normal people to be religious and unmarried at the same time. Islam, as a rule, organizes human nature, but never destroys or goes against it.

21.     It does not humanize God nor does it deify man. Everything is carefully placed where it belongs in the total scheme of creation.

22.     Mathematical formula. There are numerous instances of the mathematical formulas in the Qur’an. One prime example is:

The word "land" (barr, yabas) appears 13 times in the Qur'an and the word "sea" (bahr) 32 times, giving a total of 45 references. If we divide that number by that of the number of references to the land we arrive at the figure 28.888888888889%. The number of total references to land and sea, 45, divided by the number of references to the sea in the Qur'an, 32, is 71.111111111111%. Extraordinarily, these figures represent the exact proportions of land and sea on the Earth today.
LAND ---13 times---13/45=28.88888889
SEA ---32 times---32/45=71.11111111
TOTAL---45 times---100

23.     Unity of different timings of revelation---23 years. It was revealed bit by bit over 23 long years and yet when compiled into a single text bears consistency, order and carries with it a sublime message for Man devoid of discrepancies.

24.     The Holy Qur'an reasons with the reader. It does not command blind faith but explains and reasons things to Man before then asking him to believe.

25.     Abu Lahab. One of the great enemies of the Prophet and Islam could so easily have disproved the Qur’an by simply stating that he believed in it and yet, as had been foretold by the Qur’an, he never did.

26.     Accurate knowledge of past events ranging back centuries before the time of Prophet Muhammad(pbuh).

27.     Iram. Until recent archaeological discoveries, no one in the history of Man knew what this word appearing in the Qur’an meant. Now Man knows of the ancient city of Iram.

28.     Prophet reprimanded. If the Qur’an were the concoction of the Prophet, he would not have included within it the occasions when he was reprimanded and corrected by God. It would have been so simple for him then to have omitted those verses.

29.     Never in the history of Man has anyone who has penned any prose containing messages as magnificent as the Qur’an go on to state that it is not his own work but that of another. It is not in the nature of Man to deny authorship of something magnificent that he himself created. On the contrary, Man is disposed to copying and plagiarising a thing of beauty and claiming authorship of it. Why would the Prophet then, if it were his own creation, deny authorship of something so magnificent?

30.     Perfect balance of words. Dr Gary Miller, a Canadian Professor of Mathematics in the University of Toronto, recently with the help of computers discovered the perfect balance of words found in the Qur’an.

When the Qur’an says that something is like another thing, then both words appear the same number of times in the Qur’an. For example when it says that Jesus is like Adam, we find that both names each appear an equal number of times in the Qur’an. When however it says that something is not like another, we find that both will appear an unequal number of times in the Qur’an, being different by the digit of one.

Thus for example when it says that interest is not like trade, we find that both words appear an unequal number of times, being different by the digit of one. And so it is in all instances where the Qur’an says that something is like another or where it says that something is not like another.

Any alteration to the Qur’an by Man, bearing in mind that the perfect balance was only recently discovered, would have unwittingly destroyed this perfect balance and the perfect balance is hence testimony to God’s promise to perfectly preserve the Qur’an.
