PAS' call to ban SIS  E-mail

So much is being made of the call issued at the recent PAS General Assembly that Sisters in Islam(SIS) ought to be investigated by the National Fatwa Council and, if found to be acting against the interest of Islam and Muslims, be banned.

Ivy Josiah in her article has termed this call as regressive and has alleged that PAS threatens to ban an NGO for "espousing liberal' ideas". In so alleging, Ivy Josiah is being less than accurate. PAS' complaint is not that they are espousing liberal ideas but that  SIS is acting  against the interest of Islam and Muslims.

I quote from the Malaysiakini report on this matter:

"According to the motion, the "liberal approach" by SIS is confusing the Islamic society and has "infiltrated the minds of Muslims and which may destroy the Islamic faith", especially among the younger generation which has adopted its "secular views". (emphasis added)

Another quote from the Malaysiakini report:

"Following this, it called on the Fatwa council to ban SIS if it is proven to be against the Islamic belief and syariah, and that the authorities work together to rehabilitate its members." (emphasis added)

Now where does it say that PAS is against liberal views per se? PAS made it clear, going by Malaysiakini's report, that it is only where those views undermine Islam that action ought to be taken to ban SIS.

And PAS did not of itself say or arrogate to itself the right to determine that but instead asked that it be dealt with by the National Fatwa Council, which is the most appropriate body in this country to deal with the matter, not some individual bloggers or NGO representatives who are less-schooled in and less familiar with the tenets of Islam and some of whom are not even Muslims to begin with.

Let us have less of knee-jerk reactions in future."
